You have been invited to take part in a research project.

The survey will take 10 minutes to complete.

But first-

Before you decide whether to participate, please read the following information carefully.

Contact us if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take your time to decide whether you wish to take part.

What is the research about?

This research is about the journey to work of people employed in the HoReCa sector. Many hotel, restaurant, cafe and bar employees start work very early or finish work late; work shifts; and as a result encounter difficulties with travelling to and from the workplace. For many of them, the commute is associated with inconveniences, significant expenses, and/or negative impacts on their health and the environment. These difficulties have consequences for the employees themselves, as well as for their employer. Our project seeks to collect up-to-date data on these issues.

The project runs from February 2017 to January 2019 in Brussels and Sofia.

What will I do if I agree to participate?

What will I receive for taking part?

What will happen to my data?

Participation is entirely voluntary – you are welcome to take part, and you are free to refuse to participate. You can also withdraw at any point during the research, or withdraw your data, at any time up until the end of 2018, without giving a reason.

You will be invited to fill in one of the two online surveys - either for employees, or for owners/managers. We will also seek your permission to invite you to an individual and confidential interview to discuss travel to work.

Everyone who takes part in an individual interview will receive a gift voucher as a ‘thank you’ for their time.

All participants can request to see the final research findings, which will be publicly available in anonymised form. This includes both the academic publications, and jargon-free summaries in English, Dutch, French and Bulgarian.

Participation in this research is confidential. Any information that can identify you personally, other people, or your business, remains between you and the researcher.

In the online survey, no personally sensitive data will be requested. All data and analysis will be stored on a secure VUB server. Information which can identify you will be immediately separated from the rest of the results.

All research findings will be reported in academic and general publications only in anonymised form: this means that anything you share about yourself, other people, places or events, will be disguised so that no findings can be traced back to specific people or organisations.

This research has received clearance from the relevant Research Ethics Committee at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. More information, including contact information, is available at: http://www.vub.ac.be/onderzoek/beleid/ethische-commissie
